Are AI tools worth it for agents, or just hype?

Mostly worth it — once you separate the two things "AI" can mean. As a productivity tool, it's a genuine time-saver for drafting, summarizing, and repurposing, and adoption is already near-universal, which makes it table stakes rather than an edge (we cover the adoption data in AI tools vs. getting recommended by AI). Where it tips into hype is any tool promising it will "get you leads" or "clients" on autopilot — no tool manufactures demand. Use AI to do your work faster; don't expect it to do your prospecting for you.

What AI tools real estate agents actually use, by job

The useful tools sort by the job they do, not by brand name:

  • Writing — listing descriptions, emails, captions. A general assistant (ChatGPT or Gemini) covers most of it; for the repetitive real-estate jobs we built free purpose-built versions: a listing description generator, a review reply writer, a social hook generator, and an attention-anchor generator.
  • Follow-up & CRM — the highest-ROI use is never letting a lead go cold, which is a CRM job more than an AI one. See the best CRM for realtors.
  • Research & market prep — summarizing a market, drafting a CMA narrative, prepping listing-appointment talking points.
  • Images & video — captions, reel scripts, photo tools. Be careful with AI-edited listing photos; disclosure rules now apply (see our AB 723 coverage).

Can ChatGPT write listing descriptions? Yes — with two guardrails

Yes, and it's one of the best everyday uses — as long as you keep two guardrails. First, accuracy: AI will happily invent a "chef's kitchen" that isn't there, so every fact has to be true. Second, fair housing: never describe the buyer or the neighborhood's demographics ("perfect for a young family," "safe area") — describe the property. Our free listing description generator is tuned to stay on the property and out of trouble, and if the photos were AI-staged, disclose it per the new AI-photo laws.

The best free AI tools to start with

You almost certainly don't need to pay for anything yet. Start with a free general assistant (ChatGPT or Gemini) for open-ended work, and our free tools for agents for the repetitive real-estate jobs — no login, no card. Add a paid tool only when a specific one reliably saves you real hours; "it's AI" is not by itself a reason to subscribe. Most agents capture the majority of the value before spending a dollar.

What AI tools can't do — the trap to avoid

Here's the catch no vendor mentions: using AI tools does not make AI assistants recommend you. When a seller asks ChatGPT "who should I list with in [city]?", the assistant names specific agents and cites its sources — and it has no idea you exist just because you drafted your listings with it. Getting named is a separate discipline: Generative Engine Optimization, built from citable content, consistent profiles, reviews, and third-party mentions (the mechanics are in what data AI assistants use and how agents show up in ChatGPT). Use tools for speed; build citable presence for visibility — they're different games, and only the second one gets you hired. See which one you're winning with our free AI Visibility Checker.
